Small Gestures, Big Smiles – Supporting children in Cape Verde

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, play, grow and enjoy their childhood, regardless of their family's financial circumstances.

Cape Verde is a beautiful country, known for its vibrant culture, welcoming communities and breathtaking landscapes. However, behind this beauty, many families face financial challenges that can make purchasing everyday essentials difficult.

Although hygiene products, school supplies, clothing and toys are available locally, their prices can be high in comparison with local wages. For families living on limited incomes, even basic necessities can place a significant strain on household budgets.

Our mission is listening before helping

Our non-profit organisation is raising funds to support children in Cape Verde by providing practical essentials that can make a meaningful difference to their everyday lives.

We are fortunate to work with Aleksandra, our dedicated volunteer who lives in Cape Verde and teaches English at a local school. You can watch a video from Aleksandra here.

Aleksandra acts as a vital link between our organisation and the children we aim to support. Through her direct involvement with the local community, we can better understand what children genuinely need.

We believe that meaningful support begins with listening.

Rather than assuming what children might need, we consult Aleksandra before making purchases. This allows us to take children's voices, wishes and circumstances into account, ensuring that our efforts are thoughtful, relevant and respectful.

What are we raising funds for?

Your donations will help us purchase:

• Hygiene essentials: Hand soap, soap bars, hand sanitisers and other personal care products.
• Educational supplies: Colouring pencils, notebooks, stationery and other learning materials.
• Creative activities: Arts and crafts materials and toys that encourage imagination, creativity and play.
• Clothing: Practical clothing based on children's individual needs (or wants!).
• Other essentials: Items identified through our ongoing conversations with Aleksandra and the local community.

Our upcoming visit to Cape Verde

We are currently preparing for a visit to Cape Verde, during which we will personally deliver a selection of supplies. 

The travel expenses for this visit are being covered entirely through personal funds. However, our commitment to supporting children in Cape Verde extends beyond this trip. Through this fundraising initiative, we hope to continue providing essential supplies and meaningful support to children in the future.

We want the money raised to support the children directly through the purchase of supplies.

This visit is also an opportunity to strengthen our connection with the local community, better understand children's everyday experiences and continue developing an approach based on listening, respect and genuine needs.
